Toilet – Ek Prem Katha quick movie review: Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar’s film gives out a strong message with some light moments in the first half

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar‘s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has been one of most anticipated films of the year. The film has finally hit the screens today (August 11) and several people have thronged to the theatres to watch this satirical comedy with a strong message. Our critic – Tushar P Joshi is also watching and he has been impressed by Akshay and Bhumi’s performance and the strong message the team is trying to give out in the firsa. At the end of the first half, he says, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is a film with a message. The Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar film talks about sanitation and the importance of toilets in villages and small towns. Loosely based on a true story, the film is set in the hinterlands and opens with a scene showing a few women using farms to relieve themselves. However the message and the sanitation angle comes in to the film much later.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha starts as a love story between Akshay and Bhumi, the former courting her, while the latter taking her time to warm up to him. The look and feel of the film is true to the place it’s set in. However the romantic angle between Akshay and Bhumi does take time to develop. There is also an subplot involving Akshay’s father and his superstitious beliefs. The concept of a Lota party, a group of women, going to relieve themselves before sunrise is unacceptable by Bhumi after her wedding. While an urban audience might find the concept hard to believe, the fact that this is a reality in many villages in the interiors of India, is quite shocking. What stands out in the first half is Bhumi’s performance. She’s a total natural and takes to her role with total honesty. Akshay and she have an awkward chemistry that sort of works in many scenes. The first half also has ample of light moments between these two. Akshay is a natural too and the second half will definitely add to the drama quotient.” (ALSO READ – Box office prediction: Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha is going to earn Rs 12 crore on opening day)
