Situation improves in teaching hospitals as young doctors return to duty

LAHORE: Provincial Minister for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafiq presided over a meeting of heads of medical universities and colleges as well as medical superintendents of teachings hospitals, here today.

The meeting was told that working of teachings hospitals has further improved today as the majority of young doctors have come back on their duty and were busy in the treatment of patients along with senior doctors in outdoor and indoor of the hospitals.

University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Junaid Sarfraz Khan FJMU , Vice Chancellor Sardar Fakhar Imam, Faisalabad Medical University Vice Chancellor Fareed Ahmed Khan, Nishtar Medical University Vice Chancellor Mustafa Kamal Pasha, Institute of Medical Sciences Principal Mahmood Ayaz, PGMI Principal Ghias Tayyab and other officers were present on the occasion. All the principals presented reports regarding treatment of patients in their respective teaching hospitals.

The meeting was informed that situation in outdoor of the hospitals has improved considerably and no incident of closing outdoor by YDA or creating hurdles in the treatment of patients occurred in any hospital of the province on Wednesday. More than three thousand patients were provided treatment in outdoor of Nishtar Hospital. As many as 4,283 patients came in to the outdoor of Sheikh Zayed Hospital Rahim Yar Khan and 375 patients were admitted. Similarly, more than 900 patients visited outdoor of Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital Gujrat. As many as 3,017 patients were treated in outdoor of General Hospital, 1,827 in outdoor of Services Hospital and 2,100 in outdoor of Punjab Institute of Cardiology while treatment activities continued as per routine in other hospitals including Mayo Hospital, Ganga Ram Hospital and Children Hospital.

The meeting was told that majority of postgraduate trainee doctors and medical officers have returned back. Walk-in interviews are continuing for the recruitment of medical officers at Services Hospital where 250 candidates submitted applications and process of their interviews are going on. Salman Rafiq said that there are a few elements in every hospital that want to hijack the entire system and try to stop treatment of patients by threatening other doctors. He said that such elements will not be spared and strict action will be taken as per law against those involved in closer of emergencies of the hospitals and putting the lives of patients in danger. He said that the elements which want to kill the patients through closer of emergencies are defaming the noble profession of medicine and no one would be allowed to play with human lives.
