So the trailer of Bhoomi is out, and it confirms the fact that the plot of the movie will focus on the dynamics of a father-daughter relationship. Sanjay Dutt is making a grand comeback to movies with Bhoomi, where he plays an angry father of a sexually assaulted daughter, played by Aditi Rao Hydari. So he is out to seek revenge against the wrongdoers when the system fails to serve justice to the victim and her father. The villain of the movie is played with enough ferocity by Sharad Kelkar. Bhoomi is directed by Omung Kumar. The trailer was recently launched and it looks like a very gritty revenge drama but that invokes a sense of deja vu.
Now rape revenge dramas are not something new to Bollywood. We have enough movies to make it into a genre by itself. The thread may remain the same, only the revenge-taker may change. Sometimes it will be the father (Amitabh Bachchan in Indrajeet), then it could be the mother (Sridevi in Mom), or it could be the husband (Hrithik Roshan in Kaabil), or boyfriend (Aamir Khan in the underrated Raakh), or the victim herself (Raveena Tandon in Maatr). This year itself, we have had three rape revenge dramas already in Kaabil, Maatr and Mom.
But here’s another interesting trivia for you. Sanjay Dutt has played a character similar to what he is playing in Bhoomi in his career already. That movie happens to be Pitaah, which was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, and was released in 2002. In the movie, Sanjay Dutt played a villager and a family man with a wife (Nandita Das) and three kids. One day, his 9-year old daughter gets raped by the local Thakur’s sons, and when he fails to get justice for the atrocity, Sanjay Dutt’s character goes on a revenge spree, killing the perpetrators. Pitaah was an unofficial remake of the Hollywood movie, A Time To Kill, starring Samuel L Jackson and Matthew McConaughey.
Here’s a scene from the movie…
It’s a little strange that Sanjay Dutt chose a similar role to make a comeback to movies after serving his jail term. Either Bhoomi has something special that the makers are withholding from the trailer, or perhaps Dutt has forgotten about this movie.
